Online Game Lobbies

September 27, 2007

While I site here and munch on my Flake bar (which I think I’m the only person in the US who knows about these flaky bars of chocolate goodness), I am going to rant a little bit, so enjoy

Recently I did a mini-review for Fifa 2008 on my blog (https://cvaughn.wordpress.com/2007/09/24/fifa-2008-demo-on-xbox-360/) and something came to mind while waiting for the game to load… Online Game Lobbies, well, SUCK! Why can’t online gaming lobbies be fun, more than just a chat section with the list of names about to enter the pending frag-fest? We’re in the next-gen era now, right? I read on Penny-Arcade a while ago that they wished a game Lobby in the Tiger Woods Golf game, would be a driving range, where you could smack the tiny while ball with your friends, seeing who can hit it the furthes. Kind of like a mini-game while you wait for the match. Or, OR, the mini-game could be to wack the guy picking up the golf-balls with the cart, first one to him him, wins. Below are a couple examples of how I think in game, mini-game lobbies would be a great addition.

Fifa 2008 – While I wait for the online match to start, load up a Virtual Pitch (field for the Americans), and let the players in the lobby, have a quick soccer mini-game. Or just let them do what ever they want on the empty pitch. In the Demo you can choose to mess with the ball, doing tricks and shooting on goal in an empty pitch, let this be the online lobby!

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 – The Game lobby is just a bunch of names, with the teams, where you choose if your ready or not, how fun!!! Seriously, this is boring as shit Why can’t the game lobby be a firing range? Something innovative, shit like I said, we are in the NEXT GENERATION ERA, which should just mean awesome graphics, this should also mean Next-Gen Gameplay!

So the lobbies don’t even have to be mini-games, they can be anything, as long as they are interactive, and don’t make the player want to kill themselves from boredom.

Review: Fifa 2008 Demo for Xbox 360

September 24, 2007

I went over to Dave’s house to watch Disturbia, which ended up being a pretty good movie, and decided to download the Fifa 2008 demo on his Xbox 360. I want this game on PS3, but figured, what the hell, and checked it out. I haven’t played the demo on the PS3 yet, due to my lack of a PS3 😦 lol. Loading the demo up, past the title screen you enter an empty pitch, with just your character (Ronoldinho from Barcelona FC) and a Keeper. This is basically a “free run” mode where you can practice / learn new tricks and practice shooting at the net. This is a pretty cool idea, especially if you were able to load up the same level with other friends online, this would make an awesome game lobby. Graphics were crisp and smooth, framerate was nice and high, and the lighting was stunning, even on an older CRT TV.

My only real complaint about the demo is the complete lack of any instruction whatsoever. Hitting start, and looking at a controller setup would of been nice, seeing as how I looked like an idiot for about 20 minutes trying to figure out how to do the most basic of dribbling moves… Lame! Shooting was abnormally difficult too, which it shouldn’t be, at all.

After all that, I decided to play a match, can’t remember what club I was, seeing as how I just rushed in. Again, graphics are pretty, models look nice, lighting is stunning and the detail is all there. First thing I noticed gameplay wise, was passing, shooting and dribbling felt a little slow. I don’t want it to to be super arcade fast like Pro Evo Soccer 08, but damn these players are like middle schooler fast. A quicker pace would be nice, and quicker thinking CPU players would be even better. I also noticed the keepers are utterly useless. In slo-motion you can easily see the keeper diving for a ball that has already passed him, and is halfway into the net, wtf!? I want to play the PS3 demo very bad!

I found a pretty cool video of a guy named SvV_Ying who recorded his gameplay on the PS3. Check it out.

To MMO or not to MMO?

September 21, 2007

Recently my brother finally decided to leave the dark side, and say enough WoW (World of Warcraft). We couldn’t be happier, and we expect a full and speedy recovery, lol. Seriously, its about time Phillip. Now, hes looking for something else to consume him, but hopefully it won’t be as bad as WoW. I told him I would put together a list of current MMO’s out that I know about. So here it is, a list of MMO’s I know of he might like, while I watch Chelsea get embarrassed by Blackburn Rovers.

  1. Fury – This is the first MMO that I can remember, to be total, 100% PVP. An MMO like this has been wanted by many current MMO players, who just want to school n00bs all day. Fast paced action plus the strategic depth & character development of an RPG, sound good!
  2. Planetside -Nothing new in the MMO world, this MMOFPS brings you a massive battling world like no other. Not much in RPG sense, but a lot of depth, and immersion if you like clan battles, and strategic thinking. Imagine, futuristic Battlefield 2 set way way way in the future. I had a lot of fun hopping on a dropship, dropping alone outside the battlezone. Alone with my bolt-rifle, I used to love slowly creeping behind the enemy lines and picking off Terrain units one by one. Good shit.
  3. Star Wars Galaxies – It should be blasphemy to even mention this MMO these days. After constant sucker-punch after sucker-punch this MMO has received, Its not even close to what it used to be. Tailored to a more dumbed down audience, this MMO still has a little thing going for it, its a STAR WARS MMO! To each their own, you can get this Phil, but you’ve been down that road, you know where that shit leads lol.

Sadly, the good MMOs aren’t out yet. Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, Huxley. All look good, but I’m waiting for Age of Conant. Keep to your FPS’s for now bro, wait until the good shit comes out. Love you man.
